Subject: using catchment as demand site Posted: 7/4/2012 Viewed: 28017 times
Hi,
I used WEAP and needed to simulate agriculture water demand. Two options was given as mentioned on the user guide such as using activity level and catchment calculation. The problem raises when I used the second option, program says to connect the catchment to groundwater which I dont simulate it. Is there any idea of how to use catchment as agriculture demand site?

Hi Putu,
If you do not have many data, I advise you to use the first option. in this option you can enter a lump-sum (divided in your time steps) data.
If you have problem, let me know.
Cheers,
Mehdi

Thank you for the suggestion but I still have some question.
I tried to use the first option but I got problem when project future water demand which I need to recalculate and create another set of input data. What I need is that the future agriculture water demand is automatically recalculate using projection future climate data.
The other one is that when I used MABIA method I cannot set the area which has 2 planting season in the same location but has different area. (ex: in 3500ha area,1st season paddy rice=3500ha and 2nd season=2500 exactly in the same location). Is there any suggestion how to set the area?
regards,
Putu

Well, I hope that I got your points.
1- To model future demands, you just need to have scenarios (you can find many good examples and description in user guide or tutorial or even Weaping river basin). The other interesting feature in WEAP is using Expression Builder. you can find some good stuff there, there are some functions that can reduce or increase demand/supply etc. Again if you do not know how they can help you, back to user guide.
2- Let assume that you have one demand site and you are working on your basin in seasonal time steps and you know yearly water consumption. So, you can divided water demand base on demand in each individual season. Assume that X,Y and Z are hydro-modules (cub. m per hectare) then:
1st season = 3500*(X)
2nd seacon = 2500*(Y)
3rd season = 0
4rd season = 1500*(Z)
so, in seasonal (or monthly) time-wizard you can divide everything yourself. and
Yearly water use= 3500*x + 2500*Y + 0 + 1500*Z
If I were you I would work more with weaping river basin example. There are many good stuff in this example and it really helps that you translate real world to model.

2. Another way to do it would be to divide this area into two branches below the demand site. One branch would be 2500 ha and have two seasons of paddy rice, the other branch would have 1000 ha and only one season.
