Dear Stephanie,
I hope you're doing good.
I want to know how do we go with WEAP if we don't have any catchments in our study area and if we are just modeling domestic and irrigation demands of a city or any administrative boundaries?
I'll be obliged if you explain this to me,and if you share any literature on it so i'd thoroughly go through it.
I'll be waiting for your response.

Hi Areesha,

Catchments serve a variety of purposes, but you certainly can build your model without them. However, this raises the important question of "what is your water supply?"

If your water supply is desalination or fossil groundwater, you probably don't need a catchment. But if it is a river, you might want to consider building a catchment. You can also use the Water Year Method (see the WEAP tutorial), but it's not sensitive to changes in precipitation and temperature, if you're worried about that for your system.

Also, I would review the hydrology module of the WEAP tutorial, because there are some compelling reasons to model irrigated areas as a catchment (demand becomes dynamic with precipitation).

Thank you so much for your guidance.

I must tell you about the model, I have groundwater for my domestic demands, and for agriculture there is a diversion from river.
I will also see that part of of WEAP tutorial. and I'll anxiously wait for your further help on this. Because here in my country, there are not any experts of WEAP available. and no one can even better guide than you. It is very important for me because it is my MS thesis.
And can you please guide me how does actually the annual water use rate is determined especially for agriculture?
I saw in tutorial, In "WEAP in One Hour" they showed 3500 m3 for annual water use rate for agriculture. I am unable to understand from where does this value come?

Dear Areesha,

You can model the agriculture and river the way that is demonstrated in WEAP in 1 Hour. However, the second way, demonstrated in the Tutorial chapter called Hydrology, is more sophisticated. If you have not yet completed that chapter, I recommend doing it.

The value 3500 in the WEAP tutorial is an example, it is not from real-world data. For your model, you will need to gather agricultural demand data from whatever data sources exist in the agricultural area that you are modeling.

Thank you so much.I am going to do that hydrology chapter.

And I have monthly discharge data of a canal that is exclusively used for irrigation, I should convert it to cubic meter per year and then divide it by number of hectares it is irrigating?
Am I right?

Hi Areesha,

You could do that, but there are other ways too that might be more accurate. It depends on what you're trying to model. It sounds like your model is in annual time steps? That will limit some of the more dynamic features in WEAP that might be advantageous.

Hi Areesha,

I can answer specific questions, but I don't know enough about your system and your project to give you general advice beyond to follow the exercises in the Tutorial. That will teach you about WEAP's capabilities, the results you can produce, and different modeling techniques that you can use.

The other thing I needed to ask is that, is it possible to start two different projects with the same area, at a time, in WEAP?

Yes, you can have two different projects in WEAP. You can follow the instructions in the first tutorial module "WEAP in 1 Hour" for the instructions for creating a new area.

I have some missing data and I want WEAP to interpolate it, I am following the method that is in WEAP User Guide, but nothing is changing. Kindly guide me with the correct way to do so.

Dear Stephanie,

This is agriculture annual activity level data, the data is missing for last five years from total of 20 years. I have prepared csv file in which years and annual activity level is in two different columns. For missing data I put -9999 in front if the corresponding years and entered in WEAP through readfromfile option. There, I am selecting missing data method "interpolate" and selected the "cycle" option but it is not giving me required results.

Hi Areesha,

I think you may be giving WEAP mixed messages. Interpolation assumes that there are values on either side of missing data that show a trend, ie between 6 and 8, WEAP would guess seven. But if you're missing the last five years of your data set, it simply won't read in those last five years - you can't interpolate between 6 and nothing. Selecting the cycle option just overlays the cycled data on the missing data. In general, also, I would question why you would use the cycle option for annual activity level. I would not expect that to go through annual cycles.

I would suggest doing the interpolation within your excel file, or at the very least, assigning a value for the last year to signal to WEAP that it should do the interpolation. If you don't have a good idea of what that value should be, WEAP probably won't either.

The cycle option will work starting with the last year of your record [that has data] and then you can choose, in the ReadfromFile Wizard, what year you want it to start cycling from.
