Subject: Request for Assistance with Importing DEM and LULC Maps in WEAP Posted: 7/16/2025 Viewed: 89 times
Dear WEAP Community,
I am facing a problem while doing work on WEAP.
Problem: Issue with importing Study area shape file, Land Use Land Cover (LULC) & Digital Elevation Model (DEM) in the WEAP interface.
1. My research objective is to analyse the impact of change of LULC and Climate on surface and groundwater interaction. So, I have to delineate the study area manually. So, I need to import the shape file of study area, LULC and DEM in WEAP to fulfil my research objective.
2. I generated the LULC for our study area in both QGIS and ArcGIS with projection system as WGS 1984.
3. The same LULC is successfully importing in other models (MODFLOW 2005), but it is not importing in WEAP, instead of having same projection system.
4. This same problem is also with importing the DEM and other shape files, generated in other GIS platforms (QGIS, ArcGIS).
Hoping for a positive reply.
Thanking you and obliged.
Mr. Doug Chalmers

Anuradha,
Here are instructions to convert maps to the WSG-84 format that WEAP uses with QGIS.
Converting and importing base maps to WEAP with QGIS (free software):
Using QGIS, open your vector files-
1. Download and open QGIS
2. Project-> new
3. Layer -> add layer -> add vector layer -> … (on the right, to browse for the correct directory)
4. Open -> click add.
Using QGIS, view where your files are located using QuickMap-
(QuickMap) -> OSM -> OSM Standard
If you don’t have the QuickMap Plugin:
Plugins -> Manage and Install Plugins -> QuickMapServices -> Install
If your vector files are not merged, you can merge your vector files into one shapefile in QQIS-
Vector -> Data Management -> Merge -> … (to select layers) -> select layers -> run
Export your layer in WGS -84 format-
Right click on your merged layer -> Export -> Save Features As
Name the file, select WGS – 84 under CRS -> OK
Now you can import the basemap into WEAP
We recommend that you first copy your shapefiles to your WEAP Areas/project name folder
Then right click in the middle window to the left of the Schematic, where basemap names are listed and select “Add a Raster Layer” or “Add a Vector Layer." Select your file, open, and click “ok”.
