Subject: Dividing a basin into subbasins - Hydrological Response Units in WEAP Posted: 12/31/2010 Viewed: 38937 times
I need help with performing hydrologcial modeling using WEAP software. Since my study area is an urban area, and the basin itself is large, how should the delineation of sub basins be done in WEAP ? What would be the parameters to choose and on what basis should they be chosen.
Also, detailed methodology on hydrogical modeling in WEAP. Is there any guide available in English which can be referred?
Thank you
Usha

Unlike ArcSWAT, you don't do the GIS delineation of WEAP spatial modelling unit in WEAP, but outside, e.g., using a GIS software. In the current version of WEAP, GIS functions are basic and are just to help the user to set the schematics.
As for how to create the spatial modelling entities, I don't have prior experience in modelling urban environments but here is what I would think of:
* somehow like SWAT, you could create manually WEAP spatial modelling units by intersecting GIS layers,
* one of this GIS layer could be the sub-basins,
* and the other the urban and rural zones,
* if required you would clean-up the layer created by intersection, removing for instance very small units,
* after intersecting both layers you would have subdivided each sub-basin into urban and rural,
* and you would consider different WEAP parameters depending on the sub-basin and rural/urban (e.g., I suspect that soils infiltrating capacities are largely reduced in urban zones).
WEAP's hydrological approach is described in WEAP user guide (that you can download on this page). You could also go through the tutorial (also downloadable on this page) to learn how it works.
Hope I helped a bit...
