Subject: Reservoir outside a river

Hello,

I have a reservoir located outside my basin and I do not know the inflows. However, I do know the information for Storage Capacity, Initial Storage, Volume Elevation Curve etc. Also data on Operation: Top of conservation, Top of buffer and Top of Inactive.

The problem is I do not see outflows back to my Main River. Does this mean I necessarily need to enter Inflow data in order to see Outflows ?

Dear Melisa,
If the reservoir is located on a river in a different basin, you could use the Catchment Delineation Tool (see videos on Catchment Delineation at www.weap21.org/videos) to estimate inflows.

It's true that without any inflows, there will not be any outflows from the reservoir (except for any water you input as Initial Storage).

Because your reservoir is currently an "offline" or "local" reservoir (ie not receiving inflow from a river) water will only leave the reservoir in response to downstream needs. Also note: any water in the offline reservoir above the Top of Conservation level will disappear from the model.

Hope this helps,
Anne
